GOOD GRIEF! GROUP SHOW!

A group exhibition of exciting illustration emanating from Manchester,
curated by Good Grief! An independent art shop in Manchester
specialising in smallpress and self-published books, zines, comics and
prints alongside records and tapes direct from artists from around the
world. This exhibition showcases seven of the shop’s favourite
illustrators working in Manchester right now. They are…

LUCY JONES

Attention to detailing illustrative and print supremo. Lucy has been
flying high on screenprinting of late with aesthetically awesome
results, especially in the realms of her gig poster and cover artwork.
A master of mixing drawing, colour and text. Lucy recently displayed
her beautiful line in portraiture with her series on Niagara Falls
crossing heroes and the Black Mountain College alumni. One half of the
Mount Pleasant duo.

FAYE JOHNSON

Faye wows consistently with her collaged scenes and exquisite
pencilmanship. A free and fun approach to making odd interweaved
images, often with literal labelling and things disguised as other
things. Author of books such as “Royal Highway to the Unconscious
Mind” and “Through These Eyes”. Paint, pattern, words and dreams
combine to make good. Faye has just finished her second year on
Manchester School of Art’s illustration course.

DYLAN HUGHES

Dylan’s drawings alone, in starkest black and white, are wild. His
move into screenprinting books and standalone prints has added texture
and layers (literally) that make his work more eye-popping than ever.
Poor taste makes good taste in a lot of Dylan’s drawings, some are
gruesome but the humour and line skills make them all a thing of
beauty. About to become a doctor of illustration as he’s just drank
Manchester School of Art’s illustration course dry.

JESS HIGGINS

Creator of no less than umpteen wonderful self-released publications.
Jess has a fierce work ethic with a keen hand for sloganeering,
storytelling, pattern and composition. Quality abounds through ink,
collage and words in Jess’ work. She is as at home when drawing a
picture as she is when writing a story, at home. Sometimes the two
combine with devastating results, it’s always exciting to see what
Jess breaks out next.

REBECCA CROMPTON

Rebecca’s drawings are fun! She displays a simple and free use of line
to create absurdly perfect drawings from the animal kingdom right
through to humankind. Rebecca’s drawn line is elegance, it brings to
mind Ronald Searle and other classicist cartoonist satirists of
yesteryear. She can mix it up with in depth scenes of a
traditional/slanted nature too. Rebecca has also just finished her
second year of illustration at Manchester School of Art.

JOHN BUTCHER

Good Grief votes John Butcher it’s favourite mark maker in Manchester.
Butcher shows a wonderful eye for composition with her prints that are
equal parts blunt marks, shapes and ghoulish figures. John Butcher
also has a splendid line in posters and covers that really hit the
heights when she breaks out the collage material. Recently exhibited
in the triumphant “Real Horror Show” at Islington Mill.

DAVID BAILEY

Monochrome favouring pen and ink illustrator and keen maker of
posters, record covers and comic strips. Interested in creating a
neverending banal narrative with himself and others. Can be found
manning Good Grief! daily. David is the other half of the Mount
Pleasant collective with Lucy Jones.
